Globally, for too long; the perception that oral health is in some way less important than and separate from general health has been deeply ingrained in African consciousness.
In Nigeria, the low level of oral health awareness is the leading cause of preventable oral diseases and a close firsthand contact with her populates at the various community levels confirms this.
Oral health care is not uniformly attainable across the nation. Unfortunately, individuals who face the greatest barriers to care are often among the most vulnerable members of our society of which our respective communities are no exceptions.
The impact of unmet oral health care needs is magnified by the well-established connection between oral health and overall health.
The stainless smile programme is an initiative of one the three-fold action plans of our oral care project, (project platinum) specifically based on improving oral health through adequate oral health awareness strategies. It is an oral health education and promotion initiative, designed to create thorough grass root awareness and provide access to free dental and oral health information to help stem the tide of complications that arise from preventable oral health problems as a result of low oral health awareness.
The program is her initiative of reaching out to this population and has been designed to in more ways than one, apply the “the nip in the bud” approach of stemming the tide of preventable oral health challenges (infections, diseases, deformities e.t.c.).
To this effect, starting with the celebration of “the power of a healthy smile” in our Smile Stories column this platform will serve as an innovative educational awareness and publicity medium to promote oral healthcare.
